Fun Games For The Kids!

Almost every family home has one form of board game or another. Whether it be your standard board game such as Monopoly, Sorry, Trouble, etc., or a DVD type trivia game, these can provide hours of fun.

While DVD style games are fun, the classic board games are better as you will never have the same outcome. Meaning, even though you are playing the exact same game, the winner is unknown until you have finished the game.

Try spicing up the game by playing for different types of prizes, but be sure that everyone will win something. The prizes could be dividing up chores that are to be done, having the 1st place winner getting the easiest household chore and the last place winner receiving the more difficult, or the chore that is least preferred by all family members.

You could also try having the prizes consist of allowing the 1st place winner pick tomorrow's activity, 2nd place winner picking the following day's activity, and so on.

Almost every "dollar store" sells decks of cards for a buck. And, almost everyone knows how to play card games. Whether it's "Go Fish", "Old Maid", Gin Rummy, or 5 Card Draw Poker. Obviously, you wouldn't want to teach your child how to become a poker virtuoso, but playing a card game such as "War" or "Go Fish" can help develop your child's math skills.

Now, you don't have to have a special deck of cards for games like Go Fish, Old Maid, or War. Any standard deck will do. So, when the kids are awake, you can play those card games that are child oriented, and when they go to bed, you and your friend, or significant other can play a more adult oriented game such as poker or Rummy.

Always have some sort of "prize" on hand if you plan on having a family Go Fish tournament. And be sure that everyone is a winner with the prizes going down in vaule or size. This is especially important for younger children so that no one every feels as if they are a "loser". And, no one likes to feel that way, even older children. Although they might never admit it ;-)

If you don't have a board game lying around, why not invent your own games? Activities such as "treasure hunts" can be fun and educational at the same time. You can create your own maps or clue lists and let the first place winner(s) have first pick at the treasures. And, of course, the treasures can be anything you can think of that would have significant value within your particular family unit.

Also, a good game of hide and seek can also be hours of fun for all ages. And, hide and seek can be played both indoors or outdoors depending on the weather.

Customer Review: Best Bike Seat Imaginable!!

My husband just bought this for me for my birthday so I can take my 14 month old daughter riding with me. It took about 4 minutes for me to completely install versus the 45 + minutes that a back seat would have taken. I was really worried to buy this b/c I couldn't envision how the center of gravity would work, how hard/easy it would be to put my daughter in and how it would be riding with her. EVERYTHING is easy, putting her in, strapping her in, and riding. I was also afraid of my own abilities to ride and have my daughter on the bike, scared probably more than anything, and for the most part I'm pretty comfortable using it.

I'm 5'4" and my knees barely touch the outside of the seat when I'm riding. The curvature of the seat deflects your knees and it really is a great ride. I would recommend if you get this to go ahead and get a 2nd stinger bar so switching from one bike to the next only takes 30 seconds or less.



Overall, this is an A++++ seat and I would most definitely recommend it.

Customer Review: Not a great item for baby or toddler, but quality product.

I purchased one of these in each size for each of my 3 children, and while the product met my expectations quality wise, this is not a great item for a baby or toddler. My youngest is 15 months, has no problems holding the bottle or drinking from it, I would recommend if you are buying this to get a pouch, as when filled with cold liquids the container itself is very cold to hold. She really likes the bottle and the only reason I won't buy her another until she is older is that the flow from the mouth piece is fast and very "airy" she is swallowing as much air as she is liquids, causing her to "choke" on it a lot. I like the fact that with the lid on and cap closed this bottle is spill proof, and even when left open and on its side very little liquid will leak out. Overall this is a great product, but more for kids who are a little older. (3 or so)

There are enough activities in this game to keep a child occupied and engrossed for a couple of hours at a sitting on a rainy day.



It really is a well designed teaching tool. A child just thinks it's a video game, but each separate activity reinforces skills in math, logic, reasoning, sorting, counting and etc.



My only complaint is that when you are in most of the different activities, the way to begin the task is to click the picture on the wall. Unfortunately, this is not mentioned, so we had to figure it out. While it's a petty complaint, it's about the only one I had.

Kids: Channeling Mania Towards Productivity

More and more kids these days are diagnosed ADD, ADHD, or Bipolar. There are biological reasons for this, and there are environmental elements which can soothe or aggravate the symptoms. It becomes increasingly easy to react to each mood swing rather than to develop a plan for different positions on the pendulum swing. Yet, preplanning is the best chance at teaching our children coping skills that will serve them throughout life. A child will learn better during a manic or hyper stateif the parent is able to stay strong and kick into a preplanned directed goal.

Some of the most creative, successful people in the worlds history are bipolar. (one small list of such people can be found at: http://www.bipolarsurvivor.com/famous.html) There have been rulers of countries with it, artists, authors, astronauts, musicians, ball players, financiers. The goal of parenting is to help assist our children to learn the coping skill that they will need to be successful at their level in the world around them as adults. Your child may choose to be the next Nobel Prize winner, Secretary General of the United Nations, or they actually may just have similar goals on an equally grand scale.

Keep in mind that adults, who are clinically required medicine to help curb the mania, often go off their meds because they enjoy the added energy and creativity. They like feeling euphoria, accomplishment, and a higher sense of capability and esteem. Yet un-channeled, that high energy can run rampant, and create a wake of problems left behind them which will increase the slower, depression side of the mood cycle.

When our children are young, we can take the time to help them identify these moods and teach them subtly-- some ways to harness that energy, and utilize it in appropriate ways that still align with their desires. The following suggestions are modifications from the book The Ups and Downs of Raising a Bipolar Child by Judith Lederman and Candida Fink, M.D. These suggestions work well in the state where creativity & thinking out of the box is identifiable. This is not intended to treat other phases of mania such as rage, or extreme irritability & negativity.

1) Listen and Learn. Pick up on cues and subtle comments that can help you understand you childs interest at the time. Ask questions about her desires and thoughts regarding hopes, dreams, goals, wishes. Use this time to bond and grow closer to the inner part of you child that is revealing itself.

2) Encourage participation in those desires in a physical way now (right now) if possible. Writing poetry or a mini-noveleven a script for a tv show, drawing, picking up and instrument and trying it, shooting photographs, making a video, painting and decorating his bedroom, sending a letter to the President of the United States, etc.

3) Ground the child in reality of the situation & current needs. When she has to do something RIGHT now, calmly and detached state in few words what needs to take place. Also validate her desires by adding it would be nice to do that someday. You may even want to converse further about that impulsive desireagain: listen and learn, while helping her attend to the responsibilities of the situation at hand.

4) Meet some of the desire while lowering the intensity for her. If he just has to go to a professional ball game (now!), try going through his card collection to see which players and positions he is most interested in. OR get on the computer and begin a card collection for himlet him help pick out the cards and teams. Have someone in the family take 20-60 minutes out to play that sport with him now. After energy has been released, maybe go to blockbuster and get a video where that sport is the theme.

The process to help a child deal with STRONG impulses is time consuming. Two points of reality are:

a) There really isnt any way around the time consumption. Whether we deal with the desires head on or waste time arguing and trying to shift our children to something else more reasonable, the time expended will be relatively equal.

b) We are giving them life long skills that may save them years of frustration: by taking the time to encourage our children to think creatively, stay with a theme of desire while channeling it reasonably. And this is one of our hearts desires  .

The one star is for Amazon's packaging treatment. I ordered 2 Sigg water bottles for my family and they put both of them into a giant, huge( 19" x 13" ) box, with some air pack (you know, the air pillows?).



Hmmm... let me think: unwrapped, painted metal bottles, large empty box, loose packagang material - sound like a great chance for everything to get banged together and scratched up for 2 days during transit! Whadda deal!



Soooo diappointed. Did they have to use such a big box? This all could have been avoided by wrapping the bottles in some plastic baggies and putting them in a small box with a cardboard divider between. New hire? No small boxes? Can you tell I'm livid beyond belief? They're lucky they hide their phone number.

My toddler really like this bottle. She can drink from it with ease. I feel better knowing it's a safer material. I wish it was spill proof but the little twist lock on the spout seems to do the trick when she takes off with the bottle.

Then there are those kids who whine, bawl, scream and worse cry. So with us trying to hurry on with the task of buying, we don?t get to properly select the appropriate shoes for our kids.

Every parent would want to purchase shoes that are both comfortable and functional. To facilitate, it would be best to start by measuring your child?s feet with the measuring device available in department stores to obtain your child?s exact size. In this manner when we find the shoes that we want we can easily ask for the size to let our kid try it on.

Sneakers come in a variety of colors and designs. Your kid will definitely enjoy those in their favorite color or favorite cartoon theme. If formal or dress shoes are what you are looking for, bear in mind the occasion or event that you will be attending. If your kid is old enough to make his or her own choices, don?t overwhelm him or her with too many. Making him or her choose between two or probably three would speed up decision making. Having too many choices would end up with you and your kid getting confused. This usually results to you not being able to buy any pair of shoes at all.

Since your kids are still growing always give an allowance to shoe size. Chances are if the shoe is really a perfect fit with no room for expansion, you will most likely be visiting the shoe shop again to purchase another set of shoes which can be costly. I am not telling you to buy very big shoes but at least a half inch distance from your kid?s toe to the edge of the shoes would be fine giving also some room for your kid?s feet to move.

Finally always examine the shoes for defects and check on quality. Kids are very hyperactive and we don?t want their shoes to be ruined early on so it is important for their shoes to be in top condition. Ask your child if the shoes feel comfy for in the end it will be them who will be wearing them.
